Maasdam Sorghum Mills in Food Directory

L.J. Maasdam and his family has made sorghum syrup for many years. Starting with his Grandfather in the late 1800s to today where his daughter and L.J.;s grandsons now run the mill. The Maasdam Sorghum Mill has produced sorghum countinously every year since 1926. The mill started out the old fashioned way with a press and horse. Later in the 1940s he decided to move the mill operation a 1/2 mile SE of where it was and built a new mill. In this mill he installed a steam engine to run the press. We still use the same steam engine today and we also cook the sorghum with steam today. We grow anywhere form 60 to 80 acres of sweet sorghum cane. We produce an average of 600 gallons of sorghum a day, for a total amount between 8,000 and 12,000 gallons of sorghum syrup depending on the year. The mill is operated by Charles and Marge Kramer, John and Jennifer Kramer and their boys and Marges nephew Craig Maasdam. .
