Skeet & Ikes actually started out as a small company that made fancy peanut butter we called Skeet & Ikes Not Just Nuts Spread. It began years ago in my home kitchen. Ive always been a peanut butter nut and hence made my own peanut butter. One day I thought, What would happen if I added M&Ms or Butterscotch chips to the nuts? So I did. I started playing around with different ingredients in my nut grinder. And, to my delight, the spreads that came out were delicious. The different spreads were originally intended for friends, family, and myself. However, they received such rave reviews I started to entertain the idea of selling them to the public. Then in the fall of 1995, I began my final year of design school at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. I decided that my graduate project would be an ideal opportunity to develop packaging for these spreads. Easier said than done! Suffice to say, I went through quite a few options before arriving at a packaging concept that fit with the product. In the spring of 1996 I had two things going for me - the nut spreads and the packaging. I may have been an artist, but I was no businessman... I needed a partner. So, I asked a friend, Ian Walker, to join me in this little business venture to gauge the potential for these spreads. We rented a table at the Granville Island Public Market and showed up Friday morning for what was to be a wild few days. Scheduled to be at the market Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we sold out by mid-day Saturday and had to close up. Were we surprised? Oh yeah! Monday morning we were feeling a little overwhelmed, but encouraged at the same time. We regrouped and continued to market the product at Granville Island throughout the summer. We would both work our day jobs and then at night we used a commercial kitchen off hours from 9pm till Midnight to make the spreads. We would do this all week and then sell the spreads on the weekend. After a few months…this was getting a bit much and we were getting lots of product requests from stores. So we quit our jobs and formally started Skeet & Ike’s. Ian and I were the sole employees. We would make the product and then put it into the trunks of our cars and deliver them across the province. With the success of the nutspreads, we decided to try other products. We tried to develop a soy nut spread. But, it tasted awful! The good news was that since we were roasting the soy nuts for our experimenting….we really enjoyed them as a snack and decided that this would be our next product. Knowing we wanted our next product to target the snack food market, we began work on developing what would eventually be our Soy Nut Snacks. They were, essentially, an all naturally seasoned, dry-roasted, certified organic soybean. We called them... Skeet & Ikes Soy Nuts Snacks! What else? They were a hit – big time! We couldn’t believe how quickly and easily we were getting these little gems into stores. In fact, we went clear across Canada and into parts of the U.S. within a few months. With the success of the soynuts we decided that our time was best spent focusing on this market and so we “put the lid” on our nutspreads after 2 years.
