In the late 90s, energy bars became popular. But most were sports-focused and made for men. Women told us they liked the portability of bars but they felt they were too large, had too many calories, didnt taste very good, and lacked women-specific ingredients. Many of the women here at Clif Bar & Company were in search of something right for us, too! So, we went into the kitchen, and in March 1999 created LUNA, the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women. LUNA was the perfect solution to an age-old womens problem - being too busy and active to get the right nutrition. LUNA is more than just a great tasting, nutritious, delightful treats for women. As part of Clif Bar & Company, were committed to five aspirations to help us be a business with heart: Sustaining our business by creating a long term sustainable business model while also continuing to grow within our means. A portion of the dollars we earn and the hours we spend serve to support and improve the environmental, social and cultural needs of our communities and causes, locally and globally. With these aspirations in mind, LUNA will continue to create delicious, nutritious products and support and enrich womens lives by empowering them make a difference through the causes and organizations we support. We have a strong relationship with the Breast Cancer Fund and we actively sponsor their efforts to eliminate the environmental and preventable causes of the disease. Look for their logo on every LUNA bar. LUNA supports other national ventures, including Lunafest. Begun in 2001, Lunafest is the first traveling festival of films by, for, and about women. The number of screenings and festivals has grown greatly over the years. Today thousands of women take part and net proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and local non-profits. We also donate time and resources to V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls, and the Safe Cosmetics Campaign which protects consumers by urging the health and beauty industry to phase out chemicals known to cause cancer and birth defects.
