Loretta S. Harrison, founder of Loretta’s Authentic Pralines. Harrison’s motto is “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Harrison has been in business for twenty-two years. She was the first African American woman to successfully own and operate her own praline company in New Orleans. The divorced mother of three credits her family and friends, as invaluable to helping her achieve success. Loretta’s Authentic Pralines literally began with $700 in capital and a dream, when she decided to take a family recipe and try it out on the public at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Unfortunately, success did not come without a few failures along the way. However, Harrison’s belief in God and that she was destined to do this, kept her dream alive. The driving force behind Harrison’s dedication is being her own boss, the flexibility ownership allows, and the greater benefits of working for yourself. Today, Loretta’s Authentic Pralines is a thriving business with 15 employees and two locations. For Harrison, success continues with the recent opening of another business venture HE-brews Coffeehouse in the Fabourg Marigny. Harrison has made appearances on numerous television and radio shows, as well as guest speaker at various business events. In the social arena, Harrison also thrives where she continuously gives back. Harrison has won numerous awards for her contribution to the economic success of New Orleans, service to her community, and her philanthropist spirit.
